Surveillance of urban/industrial areas thermal patterns and materials for energy eficiency management and assesment by airborne platforms.

Summary

High resolution aircraft hyperespectral thermal images allow us to create temperature and emissivity maps showing the amount of energy leaks devoted to roads and buildings for cities and local municipalities with regard to:

  • Energy saving: locating excessive or inefficient heating or cooling and potential saving.
  • Material pollution: pinpoint material covers areas by both private and public elements.

The Thermal Airborne Spectrographic Imager (TASI) is a hyperspectral infrared pushbroom sensor operated by the Institut Cartogràfic de Catalunya (ICC) since November 2009.

Afterwards, two different types of scenarios are considered to operate TASI for a set of urban environmental monitoring applications. Diurnal and nocturnal flights with TASI over the industrial area of Rubi are used to stress the different hyperspectral behavior that an urban environment may present in time.

The temperature estimation provided by TASI is assessed using measurements from XEMA stations spread over Barcelona. A study concerning the detection of energy eficiency and roof materials are also undertaken.

Urban areas tend to experience a relatively higher temperature compared with the surrounding rural areas. This thermal difference, in conjunction with waste heat released from urban houses, transportation and industry, contribute to the development of heat island. In order to look into the temporal evolution of urban environment thermal response, diurnal and nocturnal TASI hyperspectral data were acquired over Rubi on 5 February 2012.

Project Impact

The importance of these results is twofold. On the one hand, they represent a quantitative assessment of the accuracy of the processing chain implemented by ICC for absolute temperature retrievals. On the other hand, they give support to any Urban parameter quantitative estimation based on TASI hyperspectral information, on a synoptic, objective and operational baseline.

The approach constitutes an operational way to collect hyperspectral data acquired by the TASI sensor to determine energy efficiency as well as emissivity from roof industrial resorts. The matching between TASI-based temperature estimations and ground-truth measurements for the two flights over Rubi showed that a temperature error in the order of 0.2 K or even lower is achievable.
