Mayor Ana María Martínez Martínez, along with the city councilmen for: Mobility and Accessibility, Rafael Güeto Ortiz; City Promotion, Moisés Rodríguez Cantón; and for Public Works, Juan López Núñez, presented a new expansion of the pedestrian promenade this Thursday morning.

Starting this Friday, 18 December, Carrer Llobateras, between Doctor Turró and Cal Príncep streets; Carrer Cervantes, between Cal Príncep and Méndez Núñez streets; Carrer Balmes, between Pintor Murillo and Llobateras, and Carrer Doctor Turró… have all been added to the pedestrianised area.

For years now, the City Council has worked to make the city centre into an area that prioritises pedestrians and encourages walking. After the large-scale transformation of the centre that took place in the last term with a previous expansion of the pedestrian promenade (incorporation and urban transformation of Carrer Maximí Fornés, expansion and connection of the market on Carrer Magí Raméntol and connection of the squares Guardiet and Catalunya), the City Council remains deeply committed to this formula for success, showcased by this new expansion of the pedestrian area on Cervantes and Llobateras streets).

The mayor has highlighted that the reason for the expansion is the desire to improve the quality of life of all Rubí residents: ‘This action will lead to decreasing polluting gas emissions and will help make the city healthier and more sustainable. What we have done is commit to this path. A people-centric city where people are the focus of mobility policies.’

The addition of these new street sections has a significant impact on strengthening the pedestrian promenade on Avinguda Barcelona, removing the main clashing point between cars and pedestrians at the intersection of Avinguda Barcelona and Carrer Llobateras.

This new expansion of the pedestrian zone is an action defined in Rubí’s Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (PMUS in its Catalan acronym), whose implementation was done much more quickly due to COVID-19. The current pandemic situation drove the City Council to draft the Strategic Mobility Plan for Rubí for COVID-19 De-escalation, which was presented to the Board of Spokespersons in May. In the framework of this plan, an whole series of new measures were adopted, aimed at allocating spaces for pedestrians, areas where the people of Rubí can stroll and walk while maintaining the personal safety distance.

Thus, Avinguda Llana and Passeig de la Riera between Sant Muç road and the Can Claverí Bridge were converted into a pedestrian area, an action that has been driven forward again since mid-November, now on weekends. The pavement area was also expanded in a section of Magallanes and Sant Josep streets to widen the pavements, and four kilometres of streets were converted into areas with priority for pedestrians, thus turning the previous priority on its head. All of this, added to the firm commitment for urban public transport, which has led the RubíBus to be recognised for its commitment to health safety.

Applications for access passes to the new expanded area must be processed at the Citizen Services Office (OAC in its Catalan acronym) through 31 March. An information period will be established in the initial months, so that new users can complete this procedure.
