The mayor and councilman for Citizenship invite the people of Rubí to participate in the ‘Month of Diversities’

This Friday, the Month of Diversities, an activities programme promoted by the Citizenship Service, whose objective is to fight stereotypes and prejudices and erect diversity as a positive and enriching value. The initiative will extend until 30 October and will include performances, workshops, chats and exhibitions in different municipal buildings. 

‘The goal of the Citizenship Service is to hold events that raise awareness and lead to constructive and transformative social actions,’ explained Mayor Ana María Martínez Martínez. Our municipal leader continued that: ‘We want Rubí to be a city full of colours. And when I say “full of colours”, the first thing that comes to mind is diversity.’ Indeed, the image of the Month of Diversities is linked to the design of the Color campaign. Along this line, Martínez mentioned the masks designed especially for the occasion, in collaboration with the edRa Art & Design School, which created the iconic colourful hexagons for this initiative: ‘It’s a way to make the campaign visible through one item, the mask, which has become indispensable in our daily lives.’

The city councilman for Citizenship, Pau Navarro Cano, also referred to the masks in the Rubí diversa (Diverse Rubí) campaign: ‘We are a city that is made up of all types of profiles, which is brimming over with all this colour we were talking about [...]. Working with edRa is another example of this diversity and cross-cutting nature, which we can easily transfer to the intercultural angle, which we want to strengthen so that citizens are aware of it.’ The councilman also highlighted both the Rubí diversa campaign and ‘the cross-sector work done when preparing the programming. The Citizenship Service is promoting the Month of Diversities, although the activities have been worked on jointly with other municipal services and in collaboration with local organisations that work for respect and tolerance, to showcase the diversity we have in the city and that it is what makes us so rich.’

An entire month dedicated to diversity

The first activity premiered during the Month of Diversities was story time Les ombres que conten contes (The shadows that tell stories), which was held Friday afternoon at the Ateneu. The performance was based on the shadow puppetry technique, and transported attendees to Indonesia and its stories, landscapes and music. After the show, there was a colloquium on diversities.

Highlights among the different proposals scheduled through 30 October include a film club screening of Inch'Allah, organised by Rubí Acull (Rubí Welcomes), on 15 October, and the conference Quiet, led by writer Màrius Serra, on the experience of being a parent for a child with cerebral palsy, which is organised by the University Extension Classroom of Rubí (AEUR in its Catalan acronym) on 29 October.

On Wednesday 14 October, citizens can follow the online workshop on prejudices and stereotypes given by the association SOS Racisme, while on Tuesday 20 October, the Mediation Service has prepared a workshop on the consequences of prejudices. Moreover, the Community Rehabilitation Service of Rubí, part of the Terrassa Health Consortium, has a debate planned surrounding the video Tenim molt a dir: en primera persona, obrint camins (We’ve got lots to say: in first person, opening up paths), featuring people diagnosed with mental health problems who explain their experiences.

And edRa has also joined the Month of Diversities via art projects in a wide range of disciplines, which can be viewed from 13 to 30 October in the display case at the Mestre Martí Tauler Library.
